What’s realistic at 200 KB
200 KB is the largest byte target on this site, and at typical exam-photo dimensions (up to around 480 × 640, the ceiling IIT JAM allows) it’s rarely a tight constraint at all — most photos in that pixel range, even with reasonably busy backgrounds and fine detail, comfortably clear a good-quality encode well under 200 KB. The one case where this budget starts to matter is a larger, more detailed photo: something closer to 1000+ pixels on the long edge with a lot of texture (patterned clothing, an outdoor background with foliage) can genuinely approach or exceed 200 KB at high quality, and this tool will trim quality down as needed to stay under the ceiling.
At this size, you’re well past the point where JPEG artefacts are usually visible to the eye — the compression needed to hit 200 KB at exam-photo dimensions is mild enough that the output should look essentially identical to an uncompressed version, just smaller on disk.
Where 200 KB shows up
This is JAM’s photo ceiling, and it’s also a reasonable general limit for portfolio images, larger profile photos, or any upload form that’s generous about size but still wants some cap to avoid multi-megabyte phone photos landing on their server untouched.
